What is Behavioral Addiction?
Behavioral addictions — also called process addictions — involve compulsive engagement in behaviours (rather than substances) that activate the brain's reward system, producing a dopamine-driven cycle of craving, action and temporary relief. Like substance addiction, behavioral addictions are progressive, cause significant distress and impair daily functioning. They are increasingly common in India, particularly among young people, driven by smartphone penetration and social media use — and are fully recognised as treatable clinical conditions.
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD)
Recognised by WHO ICD-11; excessive gaming causing neglect of work, studies, sleep and relationships.
Pathological Gambling
Compulsive betting despite financial ruin and relationship damage; high psychiatric co-morbidity.
Problematic Internet Use
Compulsive internet use and social media dependency causing anxiety and social isolation.
Compulsive Sexual Behaviour
Recognised by WHO ICD-11; compulsive pornography use causing relationship damage and shame.
Oniomania
Compulsive buying behaviour causing financial harm and emotional distress despite consequences.
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating episodes causing significant emotional distress; often co-occurring with depression.
Symptoms of Behavioural Addiction
Recognising the signs early leads to better outcomes. Common indicators include:
Preoccupation with the behaviour when not engaged in it
Needing increasing amounts of the behaviour for the same effect
Unsuccessful repeated attempts to cut down or stop
Continuing the behaviour despite negative consequences
Withdrawal — irritability, anxiety or restlessness when stopping
Using the behaviour to escape stress, anxiety or depression
Lying to family or friends about the extent of the behaviour
Significant impact on work, studies, relationships or finances
When should you seek help?
Behavioral addictions rarely resolve without specialist intervention. Seek help if:
- The behaviour is consuming more than 4–6 hours daily
- Work, studies or relationships are being neglected
- Attempts to stop have repeatedly failed
- Withdrawal symptoms appear when the behaviour is stopped
- The behaviour is being hidden from family or friends

Frequently asked questions
Is gaming addiction a real medical condition?
Yes. Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is recognised by WHO in ICD-11 (2019). It causes significant clinical impairment and responds to structured treatment.
How is behavioral addiction different from substance addiction?
Behavioral addictions involve compulsive behaviours rather than substances. The neurobiological mechanism — dopamine reward dysregulation — is similar, and both respond to CBT-based treatment.
Can behavioral addiction be treated outpatient?
Most behavioral addiction treatment is outpatient. Severe cases may benefit from a short residential program for total abstinence.
At what point does gaming become an addiction?
When it causes significant impairment in work, studies or relationships — and when repeated attempts to control it fail — it meets clinical criteria for addiction.
Is medication used for behavioral addictions?
Medication treats co-occurring conditions (depression, anxiety, ADHD) that often drive behavioral addictions. Specific medications are used in gambling disorder.
