Online Consultation

Distance should not determine whether you get good mental health care. Whether you're in Delhi or Dibrugarh, working long hours, caring for family, or simply not ready to walk into a clinic - Athena's online psychiatry service brings expert care directly to you.

How Online Consultation Works

Your first online psychiatry session at Athena is designed to feel as complete as an in-person visit - with none of the commute.

Book Your Slot (2 minutes)

Choose your preferred doctor, date, and time. Pay the consultation fee online to confirm. You receive an immediate confirmation with a secure video link.

Complete Your Pre-Session Form (10 minutes)

24 hours before your appointment, you receive a short intake form. Share your main concern, current medications, and any prior diagnoses. This means your psychiatrist arrives fully prepared - your session time is spent on clinical work, not administrative history-taking.

Your Video Session (45 - 60 min, first session)

Join via the secure link - no app download required, works in any browser. Your psychiatrist conducts a full psychiatric evaluation: presenting concern, history, mental status examination, risk assessment, and diagnosis if clear. You are encouraged to ask questions. Everything discussed is confidential.

Your Post-Session Plan (Within 1 hour of session)

Within an hour of your session ending, you receive a written summary via email or WhatsApp: working diagnosis, treatment recommendations, any medication prescribed (with clear instructions), and the plan for your next appointment. Prescriptions are issued digitally and are valid across India.

What Can Be Assessed and Treated Online?

Most mental health conditions can be effectively assessed and managed via online psychiatry. The range is broader than most people expect - online consultation is not just for mild anxiety or check-ins

Mood & Affective Anxiety & Related Other Presentations
Major Depressive Disorder Generalised Anxiety Disorder ADHD (adult assessment & management)
Persistent Depressive Disorder Panic Disorder OCD (assessment + CBT therapy online)
Bipolar Disorder (stable maintenance) Social Anxiety Disorder PTSD (assessment; trauma therapy online)
Postpartum / Perinatal Depression Health Anxiety Schizophrenia (stable, medication review)
Seasonal Affective Disorder Specific Phobias Personality Disorders (therapy continuation)
Grief & Bereavement Insomnia & Sleep Disorders Mild–Moderate Addiction (relapse prevention)
Adjustment Disorder Exam / Performance Anxiety Eating Disorders (mild–moderate, nutritional follow-up)

What Online Consultation cannot Replace: Acute psychiatric crises requiring physical intervention; medical detoxification from alcohol or drugs; emergency risk assessment requiring in-person evaluation; physical examination for medication initiation where baseline tests are required. In any of these cases, our team will guide you to the right in-person service immediately.

Confidentiality & Privacy - What We Guarantee

Privacy is not a feature of Athena's online service. It is the foundation. We understand that seeking mental health care carries social stigma in India - and we have built our online service with that reality as the starting point.

Encrypted Sessions No Recording Policy Discreet Billing Named Data Access Only
All video sessions run on end-to-end encrypted infrastructure. No third party can access your session. Sessions are never recorded. No audio or video is stored. Your words stay in the room. Bank statement shows 'Athena Health Services'- no diagnostic or mental health terminology on billing. Your records are accessible only to you and your treating doctor. Not your employer, insurer, or family without your consent.

What Happens to Your Data

Medical Records Stored in a HIPAA-equivalent encrypted system. Accessible only to your treating team and you.
Prescriptions Digital prescriptions are valid across India. Not routed through employer or insurance systems unless you request.
Session Notes Clinical notes are written by your doctor into your secure medical record. Not shared without written consent.
Insurance Claims You choose whether to file a claim. Many patients choose to pay privately for maximum confidentiality.
Family Access No information is shared with family members without your explicit written consent - regardless of who referred you.
Data Retention Your records are retained as per Indian health data regulations (7 years). Deletion requests handled per applicable law.

Is Online Psychiatry as Effective as In-Person Care?

The clinical evidence for telepsychiatry has strengthened significantly since 2020. Multiple randomised controlled trials and large-scale reviews have found that:

Patients with depression and anxiety who received therapy via video call showed equivalent symptom reduction to those seen in person - with higher completion rates and lower dropout. (Source: JAMA Psychiatry, meta-analysis of 8 trials, 2022)

Medication management for conditions including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD via telepsychiatry produced outcomes equivalent to in-person prescribing when combined with regular monitoring. (Source: Psychiatric Services, 2023)

In India specifically, telepsychiatry has been identified by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare as an essential access mechanism for mental health care - particularly in regions with limited psychiatric infrastructure. (Source: NIMHANS Telemedicine Guidelines, 2021)

Online works especially well for: In-person is preferable for:
Medication management and follow-up reviews First-episode psychosis (requires full mental status assessment)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - structured, technique-based Conditions requiring physical examination or blood tests before medication
Patients with social anxiety (less intimidating than clinic visits) Active suicidal ideation where safety cannot be assessed remotely
Busy professionals who would otherwise not attend Complex or unclear diagnoses requiring in-person clinical observation
Patients in tier-2 or tier-3 cities without specialist access Medical detoxification and withdrawal management
Continuity of care during travel or relocation Acute mental health crises requiring direct clinical supervision and support

If you'd prefer to be matched to the most appropriate doctor rather than choosing yourself, select 'Match Me' when booking - our team will assign the most suitable specialist based on your concern, language preference, and availability.

Prescriptions and Medication Management Online

One of the most common questions about online psychiatry in India is whether prescriptions issued by telemedicine doctors are valid. The answer is yes.
Under the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines issued by the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India (2020), licensed doctors registered with a State Medical Council may issue prescriptions via telemedicine for a defined set of medications. Athena psychiatrists operate within this framework.

Athena's online prescriptions are: digitally signed by the treating psychiatrist; emailed to you as a PDF; valid at any registered pharmacy across India; compliant with MCI Telemedicine Guidelines 2020.

How Medication Works in Online Psychiatry

First Prescription Issued after initial assessment. Your doctor will explain what the medication does, when you'll notice effects, and what side effects to watch for.
Controlled Substances Certain medications (Schedule H1, psychotropics) require an in-person first appointment before online prescribing can begin - your doctor will advise.
Repeat Prescriptions For stable patients in maintenance, repeat prescriptions are issued via follow-up online sessions - no clinic visit required.
Pharmacy Delivery Most major pharmacy apps (PharmEasy, 1mg, Netmeds) accept digital prescriptions. You can also visit any local pharmacy.
Blood Test Requirements Some medications require baseline blood tests before initiation. Your doctor will advise - tests can be done at any diagnostic lab and results shared digitally.

What Patients Say

"I live in Lucknow and there was no psychiatrist I trusted near me. My GP suggested Athena Online. I've been seeing the same doctor online for eight months now. My depression is managed, my medication is stable. I would never have had this continuity otherwise." - M.S., Lucknow. Major Depressive Disorder, 2024

"I work 14-hour days in consulting. There was no way I was taking time off for a clinic visit. Athena's evening online slots meant I could see a psychiatrist at 8 PM from my home office. Discrete, professional, exactly what I needed." - A.T., Gurgaon. Burnout / Anxiety, 2023

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India published the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines in March 2020, which explicitly permit registered medical practitioners to consult, diagnose, and prescribe via video, audio, or text. Athena's doctors are all MCI-registered psychiatrists operating within these guidelines.
Yes - for most conditions. A psychiatric diagnosis is based primarily on clinical interview and mental status examination, both of which can be conducted effectively via high-quality video. Some diagnoses require physical examination or specific biological tests - in those cases, your online doctor will arrange the appropriate follow-up before confirming a diagnosis.
No. Your medical records are confidential and not accessible to your employer. Billing appears as 'Athena Health Services' with no diagnostic terminology. If you choose to use employer health insurance, the claim would be visible to the TPA - in which case many patients choose to pay privately instead. Your doctor can advise.
If your doctor identifies a crisis risk during a session, they will initiate a safety plan with you in real time and may recommend an emergency in-person assessment. If a crisis arises between sessions, you can call our mental health helpline. For immediate risk-to-life situations, please call 112 or NIMHANS Helpline: 080-46110007.
Yes, and seamlessly. Because Athena operates both online and in-person services, your medical records transfer automatically. You will see the same doctor or be formally handed over to an in-person colleague with full clinical context.
Schedule H1 drugs (which include several psychiatric medications) cannot be prescribed for the first time via telemedicine under MCI guidelines - an in-person evaluation is required for initiation. However, if you are already stable on a controlled medication prescribed by another doctor, continuation via online consultation may be possible. Your doctor will advise on the first call.
Your doctor will attempt to reconnect. If the video cannot be restored, the session continues by phone. If the entire session is lost due to technical failure, you receive a full reschedule at no charge.
Yes. Sessions are available in English, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, and Assamese. Select your language preference when booking and we'll match you to a doctor who speaks it.
Athena online connects you with qualified consultant psychiatrists (MBBS + MD) - not coaches, counsellors, or chatbots. You receive a formal diagnosis where appropriate, valid medical prescriptions, and a documented treatment plan. Your treating doctor knows your full history across sessions - this is ongoing clinical care, not one-off advice.
